ISDI welcomes the publication of the new global standard on follow-up formula for older infants and product for young children

ISDI welcomes the revision of the new global Standard for Follow-up Formula for older infants and product for young children set by Codex Alimentarius (CXS-156-87).

The new Standard sets rules for ‘formula for older infants’ (6-12 months) and ‘product for young children’ (12-36 months) reflecting the different dietary requirements of these two age groups. It translates the existing scientific consensus on the required nutrition intake for both age groups into new rules on the composition and ingredients to be used for these two product categories. The macronutrient balance between proteins, lipids and carbohydrates, in particular, better reflects the dietary requirements of young children.

The ISDI Secretary General Jean Christophe Kremer commented:

ISDI supports the implementation of the new Standard across countries globally. The revised Standard will enable these products to better support the healthy growth and development of older infants and young children. We remain committed to working with authorities at national level to introduce these products according to the new set of rules. We call on authorities to ensure a smooth transition in its implementation.

The Standard was formally adopted at 46th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC46) in December 2023 after more than 10 years of work. It is currently available only in English, but translations into other languages will be made available on the Codex website. Read more about ISDI’s reaction to the new Standard here.
